Studley Community Infants' School

Information for Year Two Parents

We hope that your child has a great time in Year 2 and hope that this information is useful. Please come and talk to us if you have any questions or there is anything we need to know concerning your child. We look forward to getting to know both you and your children over the next year.

In Year 2 it is very important that you hear your child read regularly.

Ideally this should be for a short time every evening when you can spend some time sharing their books together. Reading is a skill that really does improve with regular practice.

When your child is heard read in school it will be from a group reading book. These will not come home so your child will need to select a book from those with the right colour code to read at home.

They may also choose books they have at home, or from the school or Studley library.

Please record anything they read at home in their reading diary. We love to know the sort of books they enjoy. Please remember to send their book bag, reading diary and book to school every day.

Reading will be the main type of homework set in Year 2. We may ask your child at other times to perhaps learn some sounds for phonics, play a maths game, learn some spellings or do some research on the internet or in books. We will send a note home to let you know if this is needed, either by hand or through the email system.

Many of our activities will take place outside so please can your child bring a named waterproof coat to school every day (even if it doesn’t look like rain). The coat needs to have a hood and be able to keep your child dry.

Named Wellies are also needed.

Water Bottles

Water is very important for your child's concentration and the children do get very thirsty in the day. In Year 2, we have no access to a sink for cups to be washed so we ask that all children have a small named water bottle in school with them everyday.

P.E. Kit

PE Kits need to include named t-shirts, shorts, and pumps. We will have set PE days, but may need the kit at other times, so we ask that you bring it in and leave it on your child’s peg all week.

To encourage wider reading we will be using the school library. You are able to visit the library with your child after school on a Tuesday or Thursday to borrow books. These must be signed out and returned to the library.  Ann or Karen will be there to help you.

Forest School

We plan to take part in Forest School as it fits into our curriculum. Information on Forest School and suitable clothing for the seasons is available on the website.  You will be informed prior to our sessions taking place, so that you are able to send your child in in their Forest School clothes.
